In the 14th & 15th century AD spices used to be exported to foreign markets of Arab & Persia from this coastal belt (Hampi to Mangalore) Port Mangalore has a name in history for exporting black pepper since the 6th century. Iban Batuta recorded the fact in his tour diary in the 14th century. ln 1529 thc Portuguese captured Mangalore. In 18th century Hyder Ali founded ship building industry here.
